Big rigs going 50,000 miles bewteen oil changes yet we're still doing them every 3,000 miles?

Info taken from http://www.cummins.com/

Cummins has come out with a new Diesel engine. It's the Cummins Signature 600 Diesel Engine. The new engine generates up to 600 hp, 50 percent more than its predecessor, the 400 hp N14.

The engine offers a series of firsts:

  • Electronic dual overhead cams that allow drivers to optimize both fuel injection and engine braking, not just one or the other.
  • Fully integrated electronic controls.
  • One-third fewer components, a key to the engine's high reliability.
  • New higher-strength iron alloys in the block, head, and other critical components.
  • Heavy-duty pistons, piston rings, and bearings to stretch the miles before the first overhaul.
  • Advanced oil filtration and engine monitoring which doubles oil change intervals to 50,000 miles.

This comes straight from the Cummins website.

"Million Mile" Plus Durability: The high-strength alloys and high-output design of the Signature 600's heavy-duty rings, pistons and bearings contribute to the exceptionally long stretch of road you'll travel before your first overhaul.

So they are doing 50,000 mile oil changes and the engine manufacturer says the engine will go 1,000,000 miles before it needs to be OVERHAULED!

At this point I'm thinking to myself why is it that Chevy, Ford and Dodge Diesel engines are recommended for 3,000 to 5,000 miles?

Something just isn't adding up!

Big oil company's keep talking about 3,000 mile oil changes. You here it every day from quick lubes and auto parts stores. When you think about it, who would end up losing money if YOU started extending you're oil drains? It wouldn't be you. You would be saving money! It would be the big oil company's! Do you honestly think the big oil company's care how you take care of your vehicle? No, they just want you to change your oil everything 3,000 miles even though they know it's not nessisary, so your money keeps flowing in.

Did you know over in Euroup the adverage oil change is 12,000 miles? They are trying to raise that adverage even higher. So if they can do it with the same vehicles we drive, why can't we? Hmm you figure it out.

Amsoil did a field study with a 1990 Mack Truck. The truck went 630,000 miles total. 409,000 miles without and oil change. When the engine was torn down by the local Mack dealership in December, 1996 and its parts were examined by an engine rater from Lubrizoil, a major oil additive manufacturer, the engine showed light wear throughout, and, according to the engine rater, the parts he examined -- cylinder liners, pistons, rings, bearings, valve train components -- could have been put right back in the engine and would have continued to provide the good, dependable service they had provided all along -- after 409,000 miles without and oil change!  Click here to read the article.
